But the authors go beyond that, offering both an illuminating look at the realities blind people face every day and the astounding capabilities of seeing-eye dogs. That account alone would have been a worthy and important endeavor. A decade has not muted the horrors of 9/11, and Hingson and co-writer Flory do a magnificent job of relating what it was like in the aftermath of the attack. The chilling account of how the two worked in tandem to safely descend 78 floors and 1,463 steps, while simultaneously helping others remain calm, is truly awe-inspiring. It’s a gripping read as we see them continually having to dodge Nazis and Vichy troops (French soldiers who were in league with the Nazis) and unexpectedly heart-warming too, as they are able to stay out of the death camps thanks to the repeated kindness of strangers looking out for the kids. It’s all the more impressive given that Jo and his brother Maurice were young teens when they made the journey by themselves (going in pairs was easier than going as an entire family). ![]() ![]() This is a comics adaptation of Joseph Joffo’s memoir recounting the incredible story of his Jewish family’s escape from Nazi-occupied Paris in 1941 to the relatively safer south of France. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Monk does this expertly– no small accomplishment, because for Wittgenstein all three of these aspects are so complex. This is the challenge of any biography, I suppose: to balance the cultural and historical background of a person’s age with the personal and emotional foreground of the individual’s own psyche and link this to an understanding of how a person creates or does whatever it is that makes her or him worthy of having a biography written. Monk paints a vivid portrait of Wittgenstein as an individual and as a philosopher. Monk’s authoritative biography seemed the place to begin. It was my recent re-reading of Logicomix that spurred me to learn more about Wittgenstein himself. Wittgenstein also shows up as a peripheral character in Logicomix, a wonderful graphic novel on the intersection between mathematics and philosophy in the first half of the twentieth century, which I reviewed here. I’ve never read his first and most well-known work, the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, but I know something of its influence through a course on the Vienna Circle, the inter-war group of European philosophers who left their indelible mark on modern theorizing regarding science and language. Ludwig Wittgenstein is widely regarded to be the most influential philosopher of the twentieth century. ![]() ![]() Ludwig Wittgenstein: The Duty of Genius by Ray Monk ![]() 5/11/2023 0 Comments I, Eda by Howard R. When the correlation between x and y is 1, that means x has a positive correlation with y.It means that x and y have no correlation and are independent. When the correlation between x and y is 0.The more the value is close to -1, the more will be the negative correlation. It simply means when the value of x increases, the value of y would decrease. When the correlation between x and y is -1, that means x has a negative correlation with y.Heatmap – A heatmap is a 2d representation of data that tells how much a variable is correlated to other variables. ![]() You can get more information about the data set variables by plotting a heat map.
